As Mobile Web Consumption Grows, Apple Loses Market Share

March 5th, 2010

Mobile, mobile, mobile.  I cannot remember the last time I had a conversation, read a tech article (or any article for that matter) that did not include some form of mobile interaction or discussion.  I feel very fortunate to be where I am during a time when an industry has literally done a 180 and is now become the leading medium to for almost every new and existing industry.  I love my smart phone and yes, it is an iPhone.  The ability to experience fully rich desktop applications on my 3 inch monitor is pretty amazing.  But as competition grows within the market, advertisers need to pay attention to things like market share.

For AD:60, market share is a key component which we review when developing any mobile application.  Sure, the easy response would be the iPhone, but a recent survey from Quantcast shows that while the iPhone OS still controls mobile Web consumption, over the last year it has experienced a decline in market share, more specifically at the beginning of the new year.  In January Google released the newest iPhone killer, the Nexus One. Though industry heads believe it failed at this task, it did succeed as a continued education Android and it’s catalog of phones.

So, yes this study is more around the share of mobile web which the iPhone still owns 67% of – and yes the app market, also owned by Apple, is huge – but one can’t stop and think that apps may or may not be around for ever as the mobile web becomes smarter, quicker and more efficient.  I remember when I used to do all my email on a desktop app called Outlook.
